Here in Japan, it’s been about a month since I started my weekend rental garden life.
During this time, I’ve visited the rental garden about four or five times.
Even while doing that, I’ve been steadily searching for land and potential second homes for my dual-residence lifestyle (Dual life).
So far, I’ve looked at numerous properties within driving distance to decide where to set up my second home.
The most recent one I viewed was in May 2026.
That property was more than a two-hour drive from my home. I even submitted an application, but ultimately decided not to go through with the purchase.
The reason was simply that it was too far away.
Before applying to purchase the land, I thought a two-hour commute would be manageable. However, before signing the sales contract, my husband and I actually drove back and forth between our home and the property several times, and we both felt, “It’s just too far…”
That’s why we decided not to go through with the contract.
So, I started thinking: if we found a place near the community garden (shared plot) I currently use, could we continue living a dual-location lifestyle?
From there, even with traffic, it takes less than 1.5 hours to get there from home. Usually, it takes just over an hour.
We figured that with a distance like that, we could make a weekend dual-location lifestyle work even before my husband retires.
My job can be done from anywhere online. I chose a position that allows for full remote work.
So, I focused my search on land and pre-owned single-family homes in that area and found two properties that caught my eye (this time, not a house, but land).
I asked the real estate agency for the addresses, checked the surrounding area on Google Maps, discussed it with my husband, and narrowed it down to one candidate.
I checked with the real estate agent and got permission to visit the site in person.
I’m so excited. I wonder what it’s like.
The land meets the necessary conditions for us to live a dual-location lifestyle.
My wishes are as follows:
・I want to build a house in the woods.
Or,
・I want to build a house in a rural setting.
The plot we’re going to see this time is in the woods.
Even if it’s not a plot of land, I’d be open to a good pre-owned property if we find one.
I plan to go see the land before heading to the community garden.
